Wood Stove Marketing in Central NY: EDDM + Lawn Signs

Whether it’s a new store opening or a push to reach new clients before the Fall, here’s a proven strategy to target people in the market for wood stoves and wood stove supplies.
Several years ago, in June, we did a mailing for a wood stove store called B & D Stoves in Central New York. B & D sold wood stoves, gas stoves, pellet stoves, and coal stoves along with stove supplies. The purpose of the mailing was to promote an Open House event and drive foot traffic to the store and line up well in advance for Fall installation bookings. Of course, social media played a part, but here’s what we did and how you and your business — whether wood stove, contracting, landscaping, or similar — could also execute a similar plan:
STEP ONE: EDDM Mailing using a unique 3 1/2″ x 11″ card. The size of the EDDM Card is unique, which helped pique the interest of the recipient. Further, we made sure that we reached USPS Rural Route customers only (which wasn’t too difficult in Central New York) and only hit PO Boxes where there were no Highway Contract or other similar home deliveries by Postal carriers.
STEP TWO: Include on the card a 2″ x 3 1/2″ business card tear-off off which was a coupon for $10 off pellet & coal supplies. This made sure that anyone who already had a woodstove would stop in and hopefully begin a new habit of frequenting this new location.
STEP THREE: The design of the card had to be full color and very clear — the images do the talking, so there was no confusion regarding what was being offered; and, is was stated in multiple places on the card the phone, location, etc. so that no recipient had to investigate where to find the stove store.
STEP FOUR: Order 50 – 100 lawn signs. To magnify the effect of the mailing, it helps to have lawn signs out at major intersections a week before the mailing hits. Here, the advertising value is compounded and magnified for optimal effect.
