US Postal Service creates Home Delivery as an available service in 1794
Fun Fact Friday! US Postal Service creates Home Delivery as an available service in 1794.
It wasn’t always the case that you’d get mail delivered to your house. Before 1794, the standard was that you would pick up any mail in your name at a local tavern or even a shop such as a bakery, blacksmith, silversmith, or cobbler. But in 1794, the US Congress passed the act allowing for home delivery of mail for an additional surcharge of two additional cents in postage per letter, a cost payable by the recipient and not the sender.
At the time, rates were set both by the number of pages sent as well as the distance between the originating and destination postal locations. At the time, most post offices were usually ancillary activities at places such as taverns and shops, and were rarely in separate buildings as they are today.
