You may wish to gauge responses to your mailings for different reasons. You might have different versions of an appeal letter. Or, perhaps you just want to see if there are differences between ZIP Codes for an anonymous survey. An easy, inexpensive way is get some immediate sleath intel is to mark the return envelopes with a Sharpie rather than get different return envelopes printed. Just use a different color or position placement along the side of a handful or a box of envelopes. The responder probably won’t think anything of it, and you’ll have better analytics about the mailing.
