Historic Mail at Mohonk Mountain House — Resort Doubled as Post Office

Old Time Resort Hotel, such as Mohonk Mountain House, helped Guests with the facilitation of handling letters and Parcels

19th-century and early 20th-century hotels often acted as intermediaries for guests’ mail, offering forwarding services to local post offices. Here’s an example of an in-house “post office” that a legacy guest at the Mohonk Mountain House might have used if they requested assistance with their mail. The service was actually quite practical, as well-healed guests might spend an entire season (or longer) at such an establishment.

The Mohonk Mountain House resort hotel even had its own stamp, “Mohonk Lake, NY,” eventually even making joint use of the 12561 New Paltz, NY ZIP Code, indicating that there was a postal acceptance facility on the resort premises. Most resorts, however (and likely of lesser size), would often have their own franking stamp to indicate their handling (and potentially for a small fee), although such a stamp did now necessarily denote post office acceptance with a unique USPS cancellation of the stamp.

Although very little could be found (by us) about the legacy of the “Lake Mohonk, N.Y.” Post office, we did find just one reference here which seems to redirect people to the New Paltz, NY Post Office in Town: Read here.
