Italian Mailbox in Ulster County, New Paltz Area

Mailbox Monday!

You might think that it’s just coincidental that the Italian Flag colors (colors of The Tricolour, as it’s called) were used to decorate this mailbox and construction drill mailbox post. But, youdda-probablya-be’a-wrong!

Italian-Americans are especially proud of their work ethic after coming en masse to the United States, particularly around the turn of the 20th Century. So, perhaps the flag reference is clear, but why the construction reference?

We can’t be certain…. perhaps it’s due to the prevalence of Italian-Americans in construction, for upon arrival in the US at Ellis Island in New York, there were few other work options for many unskilled or semi-skilled Italian men who didn’t have English as their first language.

In New York City, for example, “by 1890, an astonishing 90% of the workers in New York City’s Department of Public Works were Italian immigrants.” Many large and ongoing business concerns in New York still have Italian names and reflect this hard work and dedication in the construction industry, and who wouldn’t want to be proud of that?
